The Maynards and their children live a near-perfect billionaire life. Amon is an avid hunter, but he doesn’t shoot animals because his family’s wealth allows them to live completely without consequences.
I saw it at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival
Ayn Rand: The Question of Who’s Right for Me?. Directors Daniel Hoesl and Juliane Niemann clearly have an interesting satirical take on the wealthy class, and while there are some good ideas, I find it underdeveloped and not as strong as the film thinks it is.
Many of the performances are solid, with a few of the children’s performances being a bit weaker
The production design, cinematography, and color presentation are all gorgeous and truly beautiful, helping to capture the atmosphere and essence of the characters. The direction by Hoesl and Niemann, while a bit rambunctious, has a clear vision of what style and atmosphere they are going for.
It’s like there are good ideas that don’t really reach the potential they want to
The story is a good concept but unfortunately it doesn’t feel as strong as it seems because the story feels underdeveloped with some of the themes and characters, it doesn’t feel like an investment or something you can emotionally connect with. There are certain moments that are shocking, edgy and quite bizarre and I understand where the filmmakers are coming from and their vision.
But it could have been stronger
But it’s not entirely deserved and the style feels too similar to something by Ruben Ostlund or Michael Haneke. Overall it’s not bad because there are some moments that I appreciate.
